Let's Face It!

Updated: Oct 8, 2019

Bad skincare routines have consequences! We all have that person in our lives that claims that their perfect skin is simply down to genes and nothing else! The rest of us are not that fortunate and have to invest time and money to ensure that our skin looks great. This is especially a challenge for our faces as they are constantly exposed to dirt and germs. Makeup and dead skin clog our pores leading to acne, blackheads and enlarged pores among other things. Therefore, it is essential to have a good regime for keeping our faces clean!

Women through the years have searched for the perfect products and in simple terms the best advice is to base your decisions on your skin type and needs. It is recommended that you consult a dermatologist to identify any serious issues but following a regime similar to the one below should ensure that you look radiant for years to come:

- Keep your face clean by using a cleanser such as Peter Thomas Roth's 3% Glycolic Solutions Cleanser. Glycolic acid is used to encourage exfoliation and those with sensitive skin may want to go for an alternative like the Obagi Nu-Derm Gentle Cleanser.

- Use a toner that caters to your particular skin need. In the early years of skincare, toners were used to return the skin's pH balance to normal after washing. However, modern face washes are balanced and do not really need the additional help. If using toners, avoid the alcohol based ones as they can dry out the skin.

- Serums are up next and you can go for a brightening Vitamin C serum or a repair serum such as Estee Lauder's Advanced Night Repair. Vitamin E is known to speed up the skin's healing process and is also available as a serum.

- Early use of eye creams ensures a reduction in fine lines as you get older. It's never too late to start so consider adding this to your regime today.

- Moisturizing is a very important step to ensure that the skin remains hydrated through out the day. Again, make a decision based on your skin type and needs. Elizabeth Arden's Visible Difference is a classic. For deep hydration, use creams that contain hyaluronic acid which binds to water to help the skin retain moisture. Fresh's Rose Deep Hydration Face Cream is an excellent example.

- Sunscreen is the final step in your morning routine as it offers protection against the sun's UV rays. Your moisturizer may offer UV protection but do ensure it offers a high enough protection factor. A new type of sunscreen protects the skin from the blue light given off by our digital screens which can lead to skin damage. Supergoop! Unseen Sunscreen SPF 40 is a pioneer in this area.

Other products you can include in your regime are skin peels and masks which can be used a couple of times a week. Face oils can be used at night in place of a night cream. Sunday Riley's U.F.O Ultra-Clarifying face oil is being hailed as an acne busting, skin brightening and pore cleansing face oil.

Follow the steps above day and night (minus the sunscreen) and you should see positive results in no time!
