It's winter and while I'm not keen on being cold, sign me up for the fashion that goes with the season. I'm here for all of it but my key winter go to looks are the simple non fussy ones and there is nothing that oozes more style and simplicity than the humble turtleneck. It is defined by the Oxford English Dictionary as a high, close-fitting, turned-over collar on a garment, typically a shirt or sweater. Whether it's a top or dress, this look is very flattering on most people.

According to Wikipedia, the turtleneck has been around since the 15th century in one form or the other and it remains a winter wardrobe staple to this day. Usually in the form of knitwear, the decision to wear a turtleneck is an easy one as it is warm and removes the need for a neck scarf. It can be tight fitting or loose depending on the style you go for. Available in many colors, fabrics and patterns, this item of clothing can be worn alone or used for layering on a really cold day.

The black turtleneck is in a class of its own though. Simply put, when worn, it's stylishness personified! It was famously worn by Audrey Hepburn in Funny Face (1957) and in doing so, made the look go viral at the time. There is something really appealing about putting the focus on the face and hair. "Barely there" makeup, finished off with red or nude lipstick, goes well with this look.

Choose to wear it with pants, skirts or as a dress for a simple but elevated silhouette. Check out a few options below:
